Final Assessment

Highly recommended, today’s 2009 Ravenswood Dickerson Zinfandel is a limited-production, single vineyard delight that our tasting panel really loved. We spent a great deal of time with this wine, swirling, sniffing and sipping. We took note of how this wine evolved, opening up to reveal brighter fruits on the palate and on the nose. The feel also evolved as the wine breathed, becoming softer and more elegant. Pair with pork sliders or your favorite tangy barbecue.

Quantities are very limited, so please be sure to act quickly.

Tasting Profile

Look

Dark magenta with a slightly darker heart, this wine shows evenly concentrated color, throughout. After swirling, tall, skinny, wine-colored legs move slowly down the glass.

Smell

A little shy, at first, swirly this wine and aromas really come alive. After black cherry, sweet tobacco, leather, blackberry, cassis and plum emerge, white pepper, spiced cherry candy, sweet brown spice and dried fall leaves follow.

Feel

Cool and light across the tip of the tongue, the wine becomes very quickly grippy, gradually drying the cheeks and lips. Integrated tannins and bright acids, particularly present at the edges of the palate, contribute to the complexity of this wine.

Taste

Delicious flavors improves as the wine breathes. Black cherry, black plum, black pepper and dark tobacco leaf are the initial flavors. These are layered atop hard leather, dried earth, dried fall leaves and dusty bramble. At the very end, the subtle flavor of flint makes a brief appearance.

Finish

Ultra long, lead by dark black fruit that gradually yields to earthy flavors. Black pepper and earth lead to subtle flinty mineral at the very end.

What the Winery Says

The Dickerson Vineyard, located on Zinfandel Lane on the west side of the Napa Valley, is a small, superlative vineyard with low crop levels. From this enviably situated site, sheltered by the Mayacamas Mountains, comes fruit that produces exceptional, classic Zinfandels.

In 2009, the Dickerson Vineyard Zinfandel is particularly bright and fresh. An intensely perfumed bouquet displays fresh black raspberry, cedar, mint, and exotic orange that give it a Bergamot-like spice quality. The mouthfeel is big and ripe, but precise, displaying a sensation of sweetness that is nicely balanced with a tangy acidity. A long, juicy finish exhibits distinct minty mulberry flavors and a mineral driven persistence.
