Today’s fantastic Lobo Wines 2009 Pinot Noir, Oak Knoll, Napa Valley is a complex, unique and flavor-packed wine from a region that is not normally associated with Pinot Noir. It was this fact that initially drew us to the wine - and are we glad we tried it.
This wine is a wonderful reminder that, under the right care and conditions, a varietal that is not particularly well known, or even ‘well-suited’ to a particular AVA, can actually thrive there.
With bold aromatics that jump from the glass, bold, delicious red fruits telegraph themselves before even taking a sip. Once the wine hits the palate, it bursts with dark red fruit, soft spice and a hint of minerality. Overall, this is a very well-balanced wine that our tasting panel really went wild for.
Copious, extended fruit an elegant finish make it ideal for serving with a roast pork loin or an herbed rotisserie chicken.
Highly recommended, this is a Pinot Noir that you won’t want to miss out on.
Glistening ruby hues, from darker core to the slightly lighter edge. This vibrant-looking wine boasts a fast settling surface that, when swirled, awaits slow-moving, wine-colored tears that take a very long time to descend to the wine below.
Vibrant and lush with sweet black cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry and sweet spice. After breathing for a little while, a follow on bevy of wild blueberry, wild fennel, clove and soft vanilla oak reveal themselves.
Soft and elegant, up front. Then, the wine becomes rich and medium of body with expressive acidity and a hint of dark minerality. As the wine settles in, it begins to show off a lovely, crushed velvet mouthfeel.
Wild blackberry, black cherry, braised black fig, plum and young strawberry are complimented by underpinned sweet spice, black tea leaf, toasted sweetwood and a subtle hint of brine.
This unique Oak Knoll Pinot Noir has a long ans lingering finish. With spiced cherry and dark plum flavors that very gradually yield to earthen flavors as velvety tannins and a balanced acidity bracket the flavors as they tail off, slowly.
What the Winery Says
This is our third vintage. We have increased Pinot production to 300 cases given the outstanding response to the previous two. Our Pinot Noir vineyard in the Oak Knoll appellation of the Napa Valley gets a little more sunshine during the day than the neighboring Carneros appellation, but still benefits from the cooling Bay breezes at night. It is an ideal mix for a deliciously rich Pinot Noir. The fruit is bright, and 50% new French oak aging adds elegance
This, like all of our wines, is 100% estate grown, and it comes from a single Napa vineyard. The wine is custom crushed at Judd’s Hill on the Silverado Trail north of Napa, where we benefit from the experience of Kenn Vigoda’s 25+ years of making outstanding Napa wines.
After being hand-picked, the wine is cold soaked on skins, gently pressed and aged in 50% new French oak from Marsannay and Francois Freres for eleven months.
The wine has a jewel-like hue, with a lovely bouquet of ripe strawberries. The flavors of black cherry and blackberry are accentuated by creme brulee on the finish. It is gentle enough to pair happily with salmon but has enough structure and body to complement chicken, pork or even lamb.
While drinkable now, this wine will continue to improve in the bottle. Drink through 2014.

About the Winery
About fifteen years ago, we began to look for a rural setting as a retreat from the hustle and bustle of city and careers when we came across a small home and piece of land in the Napa Valley. We planted our first Chardonnay vineyard in the Oak Knoll district, north of Napa.
We used a new Dijon clone and also broke Napa tradition by close-row planting, which requires that the vineyard be entirely hand tended. In other words, no tractors. Randy Lewis, an ultra-premium winemaker in the valley, showed immediate interest. Every year, the Chardonnay he has made predominantly from that fruit has received a stratospheric “93” or “94” from the Wine Spectator, which always places it among the top Chardonnays in the country.
Taking the next step, we acquired a much larger vineyard about a mile from the first one. After substantial improvements to drainage and vine care, we were rewarded with excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Pinot Noir. We have planted more Chardonnay as well.
In the past, we sold all of our fruit to top wineries. The Chardonnay and Syrah is bought by Lewis Cellars. The Pinot Noir is sold to Mumm for their sparkling wines. Our Cabernet Sauvignon is purchased by Pine Ridge.
In 2007, we found our dream property on Atlas Peak, 42 acres on the eastern ridge of the Napa Valley. In addition to indescribable views, the 1350 foot elevation along with rocky, volcanic soil and southwestern sun exposure make ideal conditions for superlative Cabernet Sauvignon. Clearing, planting and getting permits for slope development was a slow and arduous process, but the payoff has been worth it. The first vintage is in the bottle, and will be released this year.
We are now in our fifth year identifying select fruit and making our own Pinot Noir at Judd’s Hill MicroCrush. In addition, Randy Lewis is now crafting a 100% estate Chardonnay for our own “LOBO” label. We have engaged Victoria Coleman, recently with Chateau Mouton Rothschild, to help us make Cabernet Sauvignons from the Oak Knoll and Atlas Peak vineyards.
