Final Assessment
You asked and we listened… and then we begged the winery for one last pass at today’s stellar 2006 W3 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. This is the absolute last time that we’ll be featuring this wine. We swear, because the winery won’t let us have any more.
Today’s wine is made from a W3 vineyard that was formerly - and exclusively - tended and harvested for world famous Caymus Vineyards. Caymus wines are known for consistently garnering stratospheric scores in the mid to upper 90s.
For today’s wine, 4 tons of this world-famous fruit is combined with fruit from the top of the revered Diamond Mountain AVA. Which such remarkable pedigree, it is easy to see why this richly styled Cabernet landed on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Cabs of Napa Valley ”Best of the Best” list.
The combination of soft, supple valley floor fruit with structured, firm fruit from the volcanic soils atop Diamond Mountain is sublime. This wine is delicious and harmonious on the nose and on the palate.
Don’t cry too many tears for Caymus.. but do remember to stock up. Once this wine is gone, it’ll be gone forever.
Tasting Profile
Dark plum at the center of the wine, with a garnet-ruby edge. One swirl shows off full, wine-stained legs that slowly descend down the glass wall.
Huckleberry with notes of cocoa, coffee and cassis are the first aromas emanating from the glass. As the wine opens up, intriguing undertones of vanilla, loamy earth and subtle mint emerge.
A deep and layered, with a complexity that fills the palate. A soft, supple acidity combines with silky, evolved tannins.
Flavors of black cherry, vanilla and red currant combine with subtle touches of resin, dried rose petals, mocha, blackberry and braised plum.
A very elegant and very long finish, extending the pleasure of this wine. Ultimately, the palate is left with a soft, fruit driven dryness that fills the palate.
What the Winery Says
Tasting Notes
Dark plum center with a garnet-ruby edge; rich and intense. Huckleberry with notes of cocoa, coffee and cassis are the first aromas emanating from the glass. Loamy with menthol undertones. The flavor is black cherry pie with vanilla and red currant, balsam wood and a hint of graphite. Fruit forward, layered complexity, nice soft acidity, pleasantly developed tannins, well balanced, full-bodied and glycerol with a long oaky finish lingering for quite some time. Great food wine.
