Final Assessment
Today’s 2004 Katarina Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic Alexander Valley Cab with plenty of character. Perfectly aged, this is a full-flavored wine that has garnered some impressive recognition, including 3 Gold Medals: San Francisco International Wine Competition, San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and Sonoma County Harvest Fair.
Ready to drink, this perfectly aged Cabernet still has a few years left in it. We’ll be enjoying this wonderful wintertime treat, now, but we’ll also be laying some down for the next few years. In fact, we can’t wait to enjoy this wine with a juicy summertime filet mignon, a grilled lamb burger or rosemary garlic lamb chops.
Swirl like crazy or decant for a long time and this wine will really spring to life.
Tasting Profile
Deep red plum hues, with concentrated color from the core to its glinting ruby edges. The wine is slightly opaque at the heart and has skinny legs that streak down the glass wall.
Bold, dark red fruit and spice leap from the glass. These aromas are closely followed by dusty red plum, tobacco, red licorice, darkly toasted oak, smoky hickory, and red cherry. After swirling the wine, a discerning quaffer may also detect savory spice and eucalyptus, graphite and black plum mixed with dark violets, brown sugar and smoky molasses.
Fleshy dark plum juice, black cherry, tobacco leaf, black cherry lead the charge. Soft tannins, typical of the region, help to usher flavors into the far corners.
Long, structured, plush, and slightly dusty. A classic Cabernet finish with plenty of red and black fruit that persists for a very long time.
This delicious wine would be perfect with a juicy summertime filet mignon, a grilled lamb burger or rosemary garlic lamb chops.
What the Winery Says
This wine was the second release from our vineyards. It immediately gained recognition and won 3 Gold Medals: S.F. Int’l Wine Competition, S.F. Chronicle Wine Competition and Sonoma County Harvest Fair. Balance combined with intensity best describes this luscious red wine. Focused flavors of ripe blackberries and plump, juicy black cherry blend with subtle tannins for a smooth, lingering finish.
About the Winery
Our old vines are nurtured by the rich soil of the Alexander Valley. Here Field Vineyards has been growing award winning cabernet grapes for some of wine’s most notable names such as Silver Oak, Gallo, Sterling, Clos Du Bois, Korbel, Fransiscan Winery, Sutter Home, Rodney Strong and more for decades. In 2003 winery owner, Katarina Field, decided to begin her own label, Katarina. Under the direction of noted winemaker Chris Wills, these hand-crafted, artisan wines have been winning awards since their debut. The Katarina Cabernets offer deliciously powerful blackberries and rich plum flavors with a hint of oak and leather on the nose. Our amazing Russian River Chardonnay grapes now showcase themselves in the 2009 Katarina Chardonnay. This Chardonnay sets itself apart from others by offering a crisp and tropical taste on the tongue, with a chewy banana on the nose, making a perfect bottle for fans of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Chablis drinkers alike. We offer these amazing wines to the public through hand-selected restaurants, retailers and through direct-to-consumer programs.
Our wines taste like you should save them for a special occassion, but they are priced to enjoy everyday. We love them, and we are confident you will too.
