California: Napa Valley
The First Decree
We searched high and low for today’s 2010 EDICT Wines Napa Valley Chardonnay, but when we found this gem, we got our hands on every available case. Quantities are limited, so act quickly, before we sell out.
This Napa Chardonnay is easy drinking, smooth, fresh and cleansing, a real palate pleaser with enough complexity to make the wine interesting to a wide spectrum of Chard drinkers.
A delightful daily refresher. This brightly hewn wine is also an excellent companion for many meal pairings. We’ll be enjoying out bottles with savory baked fish, fish & chips or a soft cheese plate with brioche and grilled fennel.
Expect us to try to get our hands on more great wines from this wonderful Napa Valley producer.
Golden straw yellow with the most subtle hint of green at the edges. Tall and ropey legs meander slowly down the glass wall after spinning.
A tad quiet at first, the wine gradually opens to reveal lovely aromas of butterscotch, light pear, Meyer lemon, freshly mowed hay and very lightly toasty oak.
Silky and soft, with flavors of Meyer lemon, lemon curd, very easy oak, bright lemon drop candy, underripe pear and granny-smith apple.
Slightly austere with bright acid and medium tannin. At the rear of the palate and tip of the tongue, white pepper add a lovely zesty feel. At the very end, a hint of vanilla persists.
What the Winery Says
Harvest timing was essential, allowing for full flavor development, acid balance, and optimum ripeness. Once the desired flavors were at their peak, the fruit was hand harvested in the early cold morning and gently whole cluster pressed. The juice was then slowly fermented by both native and specially selected yeast in a combination of new and twice used French oak barrels and small stainless steel drums. Upon dryness, weekly barrel stirring of the lees commenced to increase the complexity of the aromas and mouth-feel. Only 30% of the secondary malolactic fermentation was allowed, thus giving the final wine’s profile a beautiful balance between richness, intense fruit and crisp acidity in the long finish as we desired.
Expect to find layers of ripe pear, toasted almond, green apple, tropical fruit, cream pie and butterscotch. On the palate, a round and viscous texture leads the way to juicy pear, melon, and integrated French oak layered with balanced acidity and lengthy creaminess.
