Mission Briefing

Codename:

Altvs Shrugged

This dense, dark and richly layered wine drinks beautifully for a 2009 - and it shows such aging potential that we recommend that you enjoy some now - but stash enough away to enjoy for the next decade or more.

Altvs (“Altus”) is a special project of Merus Wines, whose mission is to craft small lots of wines of remarkable quality and distinction. The Altvs wine further elevates this lofty goal by delivering a drinking experience that rivals the best Cabernets of the Napa Valley.

Today’s 2009 Altvs Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a delectable, respectable, collectible, ineffable wine that we have no problem placing on a pedestal.

Enjoy this delicious, classic Napa Cab now, and savor for the next 10+ years.

Tasting Profile

Look:

This wine possesses a dark crimson heart that transitions quickly to brilliant ruby at the meniscus.

Smell:

Bold aromas of dense and concentrated black cherry, subtle tobacco, clove, and dry aged meat make the mouth water in anticipation.

Taste:

Deep, concentrated cherry and cranberry, berry bramble, cocoa dust, braised fig, braised plum, cinnamon, and clove.

Finish:

Very long and gradually drying, with dark fruits persisting longest at the edges of the palate.

Pairing:

We would enjoy this Cabernet with a classic filet mignon or a grilled portobello mushroom on a seeded bun.

What the Winery Says

The 2009 Altvs is opaque and highly aromatic with notes of dark fruit, leather, spice and licorice. The palate features all of the above plus cocoa, berries and graham crackers. The tannins are present, but integrated. This is bold wine with well-integrated tannins and great aging potential.

WINE PROFILE

Vineyard Notes
Throughout the spring and summer months of 2009 we experienced relatively mild weather. A heavy rainstorm in October caused some concern, but fortunately the Cabernet clusters were loosely packed and once the rain cleared, we were able to harvest a healthy crop of clean fruit. Since there were no real heat spikes during the growing season, the grapes possessed phenolic maturity and ripeness without excessive sugar.
Production Notes
Founded in 2005, Altvs produces small quantities of handmade Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. We source fruit from a handful of serious growers with hillside and benchland vineyards up and down Napa Valley. Our style emphasizes balance, fruit purity and intensity.

About the Winery

Merus began as the quintessential “garage wine,” made by Merus founders Erika J. Gottl and Mark Herold in the two-car garage behind their home in the town of Napa. The wine won international renown starting with its first vintage in 1998, but the garage imposed serious limitations. The very hands-on Merus winemaking regimen was cramped by lack of space, wine storage had to be outsourced, and legal restrictions barred visitors or tastings.

When William Foley brought Merus into his Foley Family Wines group at the end of 2007, one of his first goals was to find a Napa Valley winery site worthy of the brand. A few months later he acquired a historic ranch tucked into a canyon on the east side of the valley. One of Napa’s fabled “ghost wineries,” it had been abandoned in the wake of Prohibition and only recently brought back to life.

Now the fully updated winery includes custom-made winemaking equipment and 7,000 square feet of caves for barrel storage. The winery’s new tasting salon and a second tasting area in the caves were stunningly renovated by Merus co-founder Erika Gottl’s Amsterdam-based UXUS design consultancy.

Because our production is so restricted, the winery and its tasting salon are closed to the general public and may only be visited by invitation.
