Mission Briefing

Codename:

Transfiguration

After a nearly two year hiatus, we are thrilled to welcome back Jaffe Estate Winery, a winery that was very well loved by our Operatives and our in-house agents alike.

Today’s Jaffe Estate Wines 2009 Transformation Proprietary Blend is a dark, rich, concentrated wine that is a harmonious blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot. Each varietal really shines through, giving this wine a real sip and discuss appeal.

Our entire tasting panel adored this dark and lovely wine, which we offer to you with our recommendation.

Enjoy this ready-to-drink wine now, or hold for the next decade or more.

Tasting Profile

Look:

Dark and foreboding, with a dark heart of nearly black crimson. At the edges, a sliver of garnet cuts a perfect ring around the wine.

Smell:

Lush and full on the nose with aromas of blackberry, dark plum, black cherry and braised fig. As the wine opens up, it begins to unveil aromas of leather, nutmeg, clove and flinty minerals.

Taste:

Dark cherry juice infused black tea melds with braised plum, braised mission fig, dark berry compote and tobacco. Allow the wine to breathe and it reveals dark minerals and subtle warm spice.

Finish:

Long and elegant, with earth, fruit and spice dwindling in even proportion. Drying and plush at the end with a lovely, mouth puckering punctuation.

Pairing:

Enjoy this wine with a risotto with cherry tomatoes, asparagus and peas. Add prosciutto and shavings of parmigiano reggiano.

What the Winery Says

The palate highlights the red cherry and raspberry components along with notes of spice and minerality. These characteristics are accented by bright acidity, integrated tannin and structure. The elegant but generous mouth feel exhibits a rich velvety texture that coats the mouth and lingers on to a long layered finish brilliantly incorporating all of the component elements. As with all Transformations that preceded the 2009, the breath on the palate exhibits the distinctive character of the vineyard’s Merlot and is an extraordinary expression of the blend.

About the Winery

Who’d have guessed that a person could spend so much time studying the heavens and still keep their feet firmly planted in the soil?

For Gary and Pam Jaffe, spotting new stars in the Orion Nebula, or counting Saturn’s rings brings a fresh perspective on bud break along the vines, or the bright taste of young wine in the mouth. With its silver-domed observatory perched on the edge of the vineyard, Jaffe Estate marries the agricultural and the celestial, the earth and the sky, to create transcendent wines.

Two of Gary’s enduring passions come together here: a lifelong fascination with astronomy and a love for the Napa Valley that began decades ago. Drawn first by the striking beauty of the Valley and surrounding hills, it was the collaborative approach to growing wine grapes that compelled him to stay. He had never before encountered an industry in which competitors routinely helped one another succeed.

The more time he spent here, the clearer it became that Napa’s winemakers are committed to maintaining its reputation as the premiere viticultural region in the country. Collective success takes precedence over individual gain. Gary embraced the “we’re all in this together” spirit of the place, the mutual effort it takes to make some of the world’s finest wines.
