Mission Briefing

Codename:

Subtlety is its strength

Today’s very highly recommended wine is a must-have for any white wine lover. This delicious Umani Ronchi 2011 Ca Sal di Serra was grown and made off the east coast of Italy, about five miles from the Adriatic Sea where the climate and soil combine to create the perfect growing conditions for this single vineyard 100% Verdicchio wonder.

This phenomenal wine is delicate on entry, leading to a cascade of very well integrated fruit and minerals at the mid-palate. This is a wine whose subtlety is its strength. On the finish, the wine is dense and very long. The wine feels barrel fermented and it lacks the overpowering oak of some Italian whites.

Considered the best white wine varietal in all of Italy by Gambero Rosso (who gave the wine a coveted due Bicchieri), today’s wine was awarded 91 points by Stephen Tanzer and 90 points by Robert Parker.

Only a few hundred six packs were imported, and while we scooped up every bottle that we could, our supply won’t last the day.

This wine is drinking beautifully now, and it will continue to develop for another year or two.

Tasting Profile

Look:

A deep, classic pale gold, with perfect diffusion from heart to edge.

Smell:

Truly phenomenal and elegant on the nose, leading with notes of fresh lemon zest, white pear, and ripe white peach, followed by hints of anise and a slight nuttiness.

Taste:

Fresh and bright, paired beautifully with an underlying boldness and complexity, this wine leads with flavors of smoked pear, perfectly ripe white peach, lime flower, lightly roasted almonds, and hints of lemongrass.

Finish:

Subdued and light on the initial palate, this wine offers a very quick crescendo of intensity into a bold, richly sustained finish.

Pairing:

We would recommend pairing this fantastic wine with a spinach salad with yellow beets, walnuts, radishes, and feta.

What the Winery Says

It was created in the 1980s by selecting the best grapes grown in the Montecarotto vineyard, and later enriched with grapes from another three plots situated in the most suitable areas for cultivating Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi. All the values of a great indigenous variety find expression in this wine. Contact with its own natural yeasts during fermentation and in the ageing process gives Casal di Serra particular properties of richness and personality, without altering its fine balance and special elegance.

Straw yellow color with golden hints, to the nose it shows intense and persistent perfumes of wild flowers and aromas of yellow pulp fruit such as peach, apricot and golden apple. To the palate it’s rich and velvety with a good dose of freshness and sapidity to balance the great softness. Dry finish, persistent and intensely fruity.

About the Winery

Since the beginning of its history, the Azienda Vinicola Umani Ronchi has distinguished itself as a great interpreter of two of the most typical wines of the Marche region, Verdicchio and Rosso Conero.

Massimo Bernetti, who since the 1990s has been joined in the management of the company by his son Michele, has created wines which are appreciated throughout the world, has renovated the vineyard stock and has refurbished the great winery at Osimo, but he is not yet satisfied and stubbornly insists on following the imperatives of a product of the highest quality. All this translates into serious work of experimental agronomy and vineyard care, and the adoption of the most advanced techniques of cultivation and vinification.

Currently, the land in the Company’s ownership planted with vines covers an area of 200 hectares, distributed over ten distinct plots each with unique characteristics, respecting and making the most of the terroir and indigenous vines of the Marche and Abruzzo. Research is also being energetically pursued with the most representative international varieties, such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, for creating innovative wines which can stand comparison with the finest in the world.
