Turkey Flat Vineyards
2010 Barossa Valley Grenache
Australia: Barossa Valley (South)
We wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving, dear Operative.
This is a complex, savory and earthy wine that took our tasting panel by surprise. This dark Aussie delight had us really taking our time, discussing the finer points of the wine along the way. As the wine breathes, it opens up to reveal added fruit, woodsiness and subtle spice. This is a very flexible companion for a wide array of food pairings. We can’t wait to enjoy ours with Christmas dinner - through next summer’s zesty backyard cookouts. Be sure to lay some down for next Thanksgiving, when the wine will be even better.
If you are looking for something off the beaten path, something that will stimulate conversation - and your senses - this wine is for you.
Vividly dark cranberry red at its core, mellowing to a lighter ruby edge.
Leading with subdued, yet distinct, notes of stewed plum and black cherry, this wine balances out nicely with more herbaceous notes of sage, lavender, and white pepper.
A wonderful balance of fruit and earth, with tart black cherry and cranberry compote overlaying notes of clove, sweet tobacco, and a subtle toasted oak.
Very clean, with a pleasantly long finish, this wine’s fruit flavors are quickly followed by crisp pomegranate notes on the back palate.
We recommend serving this with a first course meal of a rabbit, green olive, and pistachio terrine.
What the Winery Says
The perfect weather conditions of warm days, cool nights and no rain during ripening and harvest of 2010, resulted in some of the best varietal expressions we have seen in Grenache in many years. Rich in colour and tannin structure, displaying primary fruit characters of fresh raspberry and plum.
A balanced and elegant wine with a palate of sweet spice and clove. More savoury characters of fennel and black pepper give way to a lingering fine tannin finish. This wine will age gracefully with careful cellaring of up to 10 years.

About the Winery
Turkey Flat owns five vineyards spread over a radius of 20km from Bethany in the south, Stonewell in the west, with other vineyards in the east. They cover very different sub-regions and give us the ability to blend the attributes of each subregion into our wines.
To a large degree our winemaking begins in the vineyard. We spend a great deal of time managing vine vigour, controlling shoot growth as well as shoot and bunch thinning. This helps to reduce yields and open up the vines to let in the sunlight. We are also spending a lot more time trying to understand when the grapes are mature.
We are not industrial winemakers and try at all times to keep the winemaking process simple and traditional, to not interfere with the true expression of the vineyard.
