Backgrounder:

Valpolicella is a blend of mostly Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara. Made in Italy’s northeast Veneto region and specifically in the Valpolicella DOC (near Verona), these wines come in both mass produced and boutique production. While, Valpolicella often stands behind its bigger brother Amarone in terms of prestige, Valpolicella is the among Italy’s most exported red wines.

Today’s selection is 70% Corvina Veronese, 20% Rondinella, 10% Molinara and is unfiltered and unfined with a 100% malolactic fermentation.

Wine Spies Tasting Profile:

Look – A gorgeous deep and dark ruby red with crimson and ruby reflections through its clear core. Along the edges the color lightens slightly to a deep ruby-garnet and when swirled, fat legs descend to the wine below.

Smell – Medium in intensity but aromatic in character with ripe, sweet and fragrant red and black cherry leading the way. Sweet oak, dark spice and subtle hint of almond is followed by a touch of black licorice.

Feel – This medium bodied wine, with a notably lower alcohol content (12.5%) is dry with the bulk of its structure coming from its vivid acidity, medium firm textured tannins and a good dose of minerality that spreads over the palate and lingers cleanly into the finish.

Taste – Lively and vibrant red and black cherry, both sweet and tart, layered over a subtle forest earthiness and mild spice. Notes of nutty almond, dark chocolate, floral flavors and black licorice make appearances in sequence as you explore this wine.

Finish – Medium in length, and clean and bright with lingering cherry flavors supported by this wine’s lively flavors and mineral texture and a touch of spice.

Conclusion – The 2007 Fratelli Giuliari ‘Corte Crosara’ Valpolicella D.O.C. is a delicious wine with vibrant, fresh and focused fruit flavors and fantastic acidity on the structure. A great wine to pair with food or to start a meal or to enjoy at lunch.

Mission Report:

The wines of the Tre Venezi and specifically, the Veneto in Italy’s Northeast corner have always held a special place in my heart. From the Amarone that have captured my heart, the white Soave and sparkling Proseco (and of course the Bellini cocktail it makes) to the fun and light hearted Valpolicella like today’s selection. The region has much history and influences not to mention fantastic towns such as Venezia and Verona, home of Marco Polo and Romeo & Juliet. History dates back to 1000BC and has always been a port and center of commerce. As such, food and drink have been a part of the culture for millennium.

We hope you enjoy today’s selection and while you do, while this is a recent vintage, you can’t help but think that you’re enjoying a small piece of wine history…

And’ the quality in fact l’ other fixed nail in the objective of Titian, Carlo, Juri and Andrea. From the Fifties and Sixty, when still all it is done to hand and while Carlo immersed the empty bottles returned to them in warm water to make to detach the labels (were the times of the postwar period and re-uses and not to throw away anything) and Titian went to sell with a funny red van, the Giuliari always had like first dream that to produce recognizable wine for the quality more Quantity.
