What We Say 2017 Ried Kranachberg Sauvignon Blanc GSTK
WA96 Located between Gamlitz and Leutschach, the Kranachberg is the most magnificent site of the domain. The chalky sands with light mica and high manganese content give the wines an unmistakably cool and spicy aroma with a very particular fruit expression. A Kranachberg grand cru (GSTK) always shows depth and muscles and develops a lot of power and length on the palate. In combination with the pronounced terroir notes, this is quite challenging in its youth, but it will inspire with complexity at the ripe age of 10 and more years. From one of the greatest vintages of the century so far, the 2017 Sauvignon Blanc Ried Kranachberg GSTK opens with a deep, clear, intense and substantial, very elegant bouquet of crushed stones, fresh mango and passion fruit aromas. Full-bodied intense and concentrated on the palate, with highly attractive tropical fruit aromas but also fine tannins backing the richness and concentration of this Kranachberg, this is a great wine from Gamlitz and one of the greatest Willi Sattler & Sons have produced in their career. It is maybe even the very best. Drink 2020-2050.

Sauvignon Blanc Kranachberg Grosse STK Lage is one of two “grand cru” bottlings of Sauvignon Blanc from the Sattler’s family holdings near Gamlitz. The Kranachberg is an impressively steep vineyard with sandy soils featuring patches of limestone. Vines grow between 450 and 500 meters elevation lending an unmistakable cool aroma to the wine.
Kranachberg shows why South Styria has earned an international reputation for its Sauvignon Blanc. The region provides Sauvignon Blanc with one of its longest ripening periods which allows the variety to develop ripe fruit flavors. Dramatic shifts in day to night temperatures, thanks to its proximity to the Alps, help maintain aromatic complexity and refreshing acidity.
Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with salad greens and other sharp ingredients like tomatoes and vinaigrettes. Sautéed white fish, oysters, smoked salmon, and foods flavored with fresh herbs all work well with Sauvignon Blanc. Styrian Sauvignon Blanc, with its ripe flavors, intense minerality, and signature texture is a wine for fine cuisine.
