Mission Briefing

Codename:

Mission: Sunday, May 12

Note: Today’s brilliant offering is the Premier Cru Champagne, in the solid yellow bottle. This wine is not to be confused with the less remarkable non-Premier version.

Celebrate your dear Mom with us, today, dear Operative. And do it in style. Today’s delightfully decadent Blue Top Premier Cru Brut Champagne hails from one of the oldest Champagne houses in France, Heidsieck & Co Monopole.

This delicious bubbly is beautifully balanced, riding that wonderful zone between elegant and energetic. Tiny bubbles race through the wine in a constant upward cascade. On the palate, the wine is almost creamy, with a delightful mousse that blossoms on the tongue.

If you allow this wine to warm a little before enjoying, you will be rewarded with a softer overall feel, and more lively fruit flavors.

Made from the three traditional Champagne grapes of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, today’s brilliant Premier Cru Champagne is very highly recommended. Especially at today’s price.

Tasting Profile

Look:

Medium golden hues catch the light. Right after pouring, the wine shows a very bold and energetic rush of bubbles. After letting the wine sit for a few moments, a light stream of fine bubbles continues.

Smell:

Fresh brioche, green apple, fresh citrus and lemon curd lead the way. As the wine warms, slightly, it reveals more subtle aromas of hazelnut and yeast.

Taste:

Green country apple, fresh brioche, pomello, and sweet lemon juice. As the wine warms, it becomes more dense and complex, adding flavors of toasted almond and brioche.

Finish:

Lemon and pomello skin linger for a long time. At the tail end, yeasty brioche and subtle hazelnut complete the tasting experience.

Pairing:

Pair this flexible Champagne with a variety of foods, including gourmet mac & cheese with breadcrumbs or risotto with asparagus and butternut squash.

What the Winery Says

“Well-defined and energetic, with racy acidity driving flavors of fresh-cut apple, black cherry, candied lemon zest and a richer note of pear financier. Offers a fresh, minerally finish.” 91 Points - Wine Spectator

Heidsieck & Co “Monopole” is a champagne house located in the Champagne region of France. It was founded in 1785 by Florens-Louis Heidsieck. Today, Heidsieck is owned by the Vranken company (located in Épernay), who also have Pommery and Demoiselle in their portfolio. The champagne has a lot of pinot noir in the standard cuvée which makes it a little bit heavier in its style.

About the Winery

Heidsieck & Co. Monopole is one of the oldest Champagne firms in all of France’s Champagne region. The origins go back to the 18th century. Following in the footsteps of Florens-Louis Heidsieck, his nephew Henri-Louis Walbaum and brother-in-law Auguste Heidsieck created one of the most sought after Champagnes ever. In 1895, the firm already shipped over 1.5 million bottles worldwide. In 1818, Heidsieck was appointed suppliers of Champagne to the king of Prussia, emperor of Germany; in 1911, it was appointed suppliers of Champagne to the English court. In 1933, Heidsieck Champagne was featured at the Swedish court and at the table of Csar Nicolas II (the latter ordered over 400,000 bottles a year for his personal use).

Heidsieck’s Champagne is very Pinot Noir-centric, with the varietal making up close to 70% in each bottle. The rest is a blend of Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay.
