Mission Briefing

Codename:

Message in a bottle

Agent Red is extremely picky when it comes to certain wines: GSM (Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre) blends in particular, as many examples of this blend tend toward being rather astringent. Today’s wine made it past Agent Red and the rest of our tasting panel with flying colors!

Amidst an ocean of Cotes du Rhone, this wine shows remarkable distinctiveness and elegance. There is real structure and depth here, making the wine a really lovely surprise. With plenty of fruit, an elegant mouth feel and great aromatics, we offer you this 2011 Domaine Chantepierre Côtes du Rhône with our heartiest recommendation.

This wine is drinking beautifully at the moment, and it will go for another 5 years or more.

Tasting Profile

Look:

Rich and dark with deep garnet hues right from the edge and through the slightly darker heart.

Smell:

Dried violets, fresh and very clean-smelling potting soil (a truly lovely smell), plum skin, subtle blackberry, subtle cassis and hints of rosemary and dried twig.

Taste:

Great structure and depth, with underripe blackberry, pomegranate, dried violets and dried cranberry (unsweetened), with a under-layer of leather, walnut and dark minerals.

Finish:

Leather and dark minerals support the fruit and violets long into the lingering finish.

Pairing:

Enjoy this better-than-most GSMs with a substantial lamb or beef dish. We’ll be enjoying ours with teriyaki spareribs.

What the Winery Says

The CAVE DES VIGNERONS DE TAVEL is in the purest Provençal style. It was built in 1937 when Tavel wines were labelled AOC. Cave deTavel produces half of the Tavel AOC wines, as well as Lirac, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages and Côtes-du-Rhône. There are 140 producers, all involved in the day-to-day life of the winery and have their say in the investment decisions for making wines which frequently win medals and are regularly mentioned in wine guides.
